This is a genuine WWII NZ Side Cap or Field Service Cap.

A NZ Army Field Service Cap occasionally referred to as a 'Khaki Forage Cap' or 'Side Cap'.

Introduced into the army as Universal Pattern Field Service Cap around 1937 and saw extensive service during World War II. It used to be worn with the battle dress.
